Chinatown Courtship

I am still busy with reviewing for my December exams and I couldn’t update every day or weekly on my blog but the good news is: my writing buzz is still on. 🙂

I am sharing this to you now and I hope you take a chance on reading this.

Do tell me what you think of my story through a comment here or on wattpad.com 😀

Without further a-do here it is:

china court

About the story:

Jake meets Lin ,a unique Filipino- Chinese girl, at the busy streets of Binondo Manila and instantly falls in love with her. Join him as he faces the challenges to have a chance and a place in Lin’s heart.

Excerpt from Part 1:

Walking around Binondo, Manila was a past time I developed after my summer internship shift ended. I enjoyed the mixture of different architectural structures in the area and it always felt like I am transported to Europe and China at the same time.

The people you see in the area were also a mixture cultures, at one side of the district are Filipinos chatting madly in either Tagalog or Visayan. At the next corner, you hear Mandarin, Fukien or Cantonese speaking Chinese high school girls walking behind you.

This is what I like at this part of the city. It’s never the same every day, there will always be peculiar or special about this place.

Our First and Last (Scribbles #6)

Disclaimer:

This is the raw version of my short story submission at bookbed.org with the same title.

Article submitted: February 11, 2016

I am sharing this unedited version of my composition because I want to inspire and make other people feel that they can also write and share their stories with the world. You don’t need to keep it to yourself if you know it has this “magic” to you then it might be something someone needs to read to help or inspire them as well. It’s called paying it forward.

I was once in your position. 😀

Title: Our First and Last.

I never thought I would have a chance to walk hand and hand with you on a Valentine’s Day weekend. Every Sunday is your day with her. I already accepted that I can only be with you on a normal day where everybody is busy with their own lives; through birthdays, anniversaries, Christmases and other special holidays I knew I had to spend it without you by my side.

You looked at me with those “Chinito” eyes that never fail to make me feel weak. All I could do was smile back and treasure this moment we have. A sunny day with no distractions or no phone calls from anyone that do not know my existence.

You called me last night to tell me that you wanted to spend this day with me. I tried to contain myself but inside I was screaming and jumping up and down for joy. Your voice was cracking while we were talking about when, where and how we will meet. I asked “Anung problema?” (What’s the problem?) You started to tell me that you are fighting with her for almost a week now. It was because she found out about your “deeds”, as we call it. You told me that she told you to stop it. She asked for space and right now you are complying with her request. All the excitement inside of me died down; Was I just a doormat to go to when you are feeling alone? Despite that, I still agreed on meeting and spending the day with you.

I was at your doorstep at around 10 o’clock in the morning. I did not put make-up on and only wore a simple shirt, a pair of jeans and sneakers. I was going to bring you to Tagaytay. The place where we first said we love each other. I do not know if it would make you forget everything you told me last night but it was well worth the shot. The drive there was silent. I did not know what to talk about and I can see that you were crying the whole night. I put out a smile just to reassure you that you shouldn’t be too sad and you tried your best to smile back but I know you were holding back tears.

We arrived just in time for lunch, you did not eat a lot. I told myself that eating may not be a way to make you happy. So I drove us to the Sky Ranch and asked you “May naalala ka?” (Do you remember anything?) You smiled and said “Oo naman, dyan ka nagprofess ng love mo para sa akin.”(This is where you professed your love to me) I frowned and sarcastically said “Ang gwapo mo naman.” (You’re so good looking). We both laughed and that time I knew you were trying your best to make this day memorable for me as much as I want it to be the same for you.

As we walked to our last stop, holding hands, you told me you love me. I answered back “Alam ko naman yun.” (I already know that.) Your grip on my hands got tighter. Before I sat down opposite to you; you hugged me tightly and whispered into my ears “I’m sorry, Jade.” I stopped but you gestured for me to sit down. I could see your worried face but before I could ask you what was that all about, our meal arrived and you ate quietly. I was now the one that did not have any appetite. “Hindi ba masarap yung inorder mo?” (Don’t you like the taste of what you ordered?”) was all you asked me. You devoured your whole dish and also my left over. After everything is consumed your face turned into the gloomy face you had when I picked you up this morning. “Halika na, uwi na tayo.” (Come on, let’s go home”) you smiled at me and I smiled back. We were still silent on our way home. I still had questions inside my head but I was concentrated on driving us safely home.

I dropped you off at your home, your mother was already waiting for you outside. I said my hello and she told me to take care. It was a short drive home but before I arrived my phone notified me that I received a text message. When I arrived it was the first thing I looked at. It was from you, this is what it said:

From: Mark (+639**325619820)

Message:

You are and forever will be my last love.

(Phoebe is 3 months pregnant. We will get married this coming week. I wanted to spend my last valentine’s day as a single man with you. I know you will try your best not to see me anymore but I hope to see you soon. I’m sorry I couldn’t tell it to you earlier. I did not want to ruin this day. I love you and will always do. You are and forever will be my last love.)

I was right, I will never forget this Valentine’s Day; it was the first and last I will have with you.

First book review: One Lovely Summer Day (L Reviews #7)

25448435

Title of the book: One Lovely Summer Day

Author: Amae Dechavez

Category: Young Adult Fiction, Novelette, ebook

What is it about?

Ethan, a handsome boy-next-door, meets Maylie a girl he can never compare to the local girls at his small and beautiful town of Pila, Laguna. They became friends easily and this lead to Ethan finally realizing that Maylie is the girl he is in love with. He tries his best to confess his love for her before his time runs out.

A good light read for a lazy reading day

This book is a novelette. It’s not a “short” story but it is not a long 20 chapters book.

It is my first attempt to read a Filipino/Tagalog book for leisure and not for a school book report and to tell you all the truth I had fun reading this book.

It is not the type of story that had a lot of situations, events and problems happening around the characters. Which is the reason why I couldn’t put my tablet down while I was reading it. The setting of this story made me want to go there and experience what it is like to live or stay in such quiet and rural Filipino town.

It reminded me of the time where nearest mall was 2 hours away and that everybody knows everyone around the town. It took me back to where the only way to meet people is thru roaming around and greeting everyone that passes by. There was no high speed internet, smart phones and applications where the love of your life is just a swipe to the right away.

The two main characters, Ethan and Maylie, are relatable even to the teenagers now. Just like how the author wrote him, Ethan, is a very likable young man. He is and ,I think, was the ideal man a normal girl would love to hang around and have a relationship with. Dechavez did a great job with creating Maylie as she (the book character) is someone you can empathize with. Together these two characters are a match made in heaven.

What I didn’t like.

I had moments where I got lost in the story. Maybe it is because of my own lack of understanding in my own written native language or maybe it is because the book was well written and some words left me wondering what it meant.

All in all

This book/ story/ novelette is a masterpiece. For someone who is not a fan of Filipino or Tagalog books I am happy I had the chance to discover this author and her books. It took me down memory lane where, in my opinion, love and being in love is such a magical feeling to be experienced. It is worth the time and the effort to read as much as the effort it took for the author to create such lovable story.

If you want to read this book it is available on digital format at buqo app.

This is the first book in the series entitled “One day”.

I am currently reading the second  book and I cannot wait to share what I think of the next story in the series. 😀

I would like to thank Ms. Amae Dechavez for the opportunity she has given me to read and review her work/s.
